Correcting Sentences, reading and writing

What’s included? This download includes four A4, portrait pdf sheets to practise reading and writing to correct x8 simple sentences. Every sentence has x3 mistakes to correct. The last two pages include the same sentences with every mistake made clear. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details Pages 1 and 2 both include x4 sentences, each in a separate box, illustrated with a simple image on the right. Both pages include the same instructions at the top - making it clear to learners that there are x3 mistakes in each sentence and what these mistakes might be. Mistakes may be spellings, capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. There is a clear space for learners to write their name at the base of both pages. The words included and spelling errors make the level of this activity aimed at learners who are learning Phase 5 phonics. Sentences include words containing Phase 5 sounds (ea, ay, a-e, aw, ph) as well as a knowledge of common high frequency words including she, you, his, are, and, said, see, their, not, with, at, the, to, do, that, can, in, loved, dad. The pictures provide clues to assist reading unfamiliar words (e.g. lions, zoo, sheep, lambs, chicken, grapes, bake) to encourage learners to use a range of reading skills when decoding these sentences if they are not at a level to read them on-sight. Pages 3 and 4 clearly show the answers in exactly the same format to encourage learners to be autonomous in checking their own learning. Each mistake is circled in pink and corrected clearly underneath to make clear to learners exactly where and what each mistake was. What’s included? x4 sheets total for Phase 2 phonics (Set 1 - satpin). x3 sheets with x6 cards to cut out plus x1 ‘answers’ sheet. All landscape orientation, pdf format Who’s it for? This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set has been designed practise sounding out and writing simple words using only sounds in Phase 2. This set focuses on letters s, a, t, p, i, n. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently and/or for learners to revisit these sounds with an adult. This resource has been designed for Early Years children, pupils in Year 1 who are just learning these sounds for the first time or who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for learners with additional learning needs. How to use it? An adult cuts along the dotted lines and places the set of x6 word cards on a table top. Learners look at the image on the left (of each card) - say this out loud and sound it out. Learners then write these sounds as graphemes on the lines (on the right) of each card/strip. A visual answer sheet is included which learners can use themselves to encourage autonomy. Resource Details… ALL images featured here have been chose because they CAN be sounded out in the order that the Phase 2 sounds have been learnt. This red ‘Set 1’ (with the exception of ‘nest’ - which contains an ‘e’ from set 3) includes words which all contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n. The same design resource for the remaining letters in Phase 2 are also available in my TES shop. What’s included? This download includes one A4, pdf sheet (portrait) to practise handwriting the days of the week (in order). Resource details Two versions (including this one!) of this resource are available in my TES shop in the same layout, both have clear starting dots as well as ‘tracing dots’ to follow for every letter. On this version the learner writes onto a pale grey which shows each letter shape. The font used is Sassoon Infant Std - size 100. This activity has been designed to write straight on. Lines (under each day of the week) are included to model how letters look when positioned on a line. There is a clear space at the base of each sheet for learners to write their name. Who’s it for? Ants on apples x26 Alphabet Rhymes A-Z Set

What’s included? This download includes x26 simple, predictable alphabet rhymes for every letter of the alphabet - in colour AND black and white (so x52 sheets in total). Every rhyme has been set out landscape orientation. What’s it for? These rhymes have been designed for learners to practise reading simple words (images make it clear what the noun words are) and practise each phonic sound using a pointer (or pointy finger!) Some rhymes are more ‘silly’ than others(!) This is a unique, fun and engaging way to practise reading and phonics that all learners will enjoy. These rhymes also provide a great opportunity to practise using one to one correspondence - an important early reading skill. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds and practising reading using one to one correspondence. Resource Details The layout of every letter/sound rhyme is in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent. Resource layout The font used is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 50, so a good, ‘easy to read’ size. Each rhyme follows this structure - Ants on apples a, a, a. Ants on apples a, a, a. Ants on apples a, a, a. Ants on apples! Letters a, b, c, d, e, f ,g h, i, j, l, m, n, p, s include the word ‘on’ within the rhyme. Letters k, o, q, r, t, v, w, x, y, z include the word ‘and’ within the rhyme. The letter ‘u’ is ‘upside-down umbrellas, u, u, u’. How to use this resource Learners might like to practise reading these on their own, in pairs or small groups or even as a class during a whole carpet session, reading/singing along together. As I think TES only allows x20 uploads per listing I have included the following letters together - ‘o’ and ‘p’, ‘q’ and ‘r’, ‘s’ and ‘t’, ‘u’ and ‘v’, ‘w’ and ‘x’ and ‘y’ and ‘z’ (making x26 rhymes in total!) Suggestions I recommend printing out the colour versions of these (the colours look so lovely!) and laminating each rhyme to help keep them in good condition. You may wish to introduce these rhymes alongside learning these sounds for the first time and have a set (e.g. of x6) of every rhyme printed out and laminated for groups to use as an extension/quiet activity. Or, these rhymes may be good to introduce later to recap on some sounds which may be proving to be more tricky to remember. My classes of early years and year one children were really motivated to use these and very good at practising them quietly to themselves using ‘whispery voices’ (so cute!) I found that all learners really enjoyed using these with a ‘pointer’ which I had a pot of (pointers!) stored with the rhymes, ready to use.

What’s included? x8 sheets (activity and answers) for Phase 2 split into x4 activity sets. Portrait orientation, pdf format What’s it for? This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set has kept little hands very busy and focused (for me!) I hope the same will be true for you! This has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups to be getting on with independently. Phase 3 (x5 sets) in same design is now available in my TES shop if you like/d this one. How to use it? Each learner needs to cut out x12 ‘phoneme pictures’ and match x2 of these ‘phoneme pictures’ to every grapheme (printed on the left of each sheet). Dotted lines guide where to cut, though picture-squares could be pre-cut for those who struggle with cutting out. Resource Details… I split ‘phase 2’ into four sets, one set per sheet. Not all phonemes are ‘initial’ letters (in sets 3 and 4 here) - so learners may need this pointing out before working on these independently if you want them to be kept focused. I have made which sounds these are ‘bold’ (below) for your quick, easy reference… I will list the answers here in case they are not obvious! Set 1 s - scissors, snake a - apple, avocado t - torch, tractor p - panda, pear (learners should watch out not to confuse ‘needle’ with ‘pin’) i - ink, igloo n - narwhal, needle (NOT ‘pin’!) Set 2 m - mouse, milk d - dog (daschund, ‘double d’ !), dinosaur (diplodocus, also ‘double d’ !) g - glasses (green - ‘double g’ ! ), goat o - (orange) octopus (double ‘o’!), orange c - cat, clock k - key, kangaroo Set 3 ck - sock, duck (‘end’ sound here so may catch out some learners) e - elephant, egg u - umbrella (upside -down ‘double u’ !), up (stairs - arrow indicates this) r - robot, rainbow h - horse, house b - balloon (blue - ‘double b’ !), bee Set 4 ck - truck, black (‘ck’ is reinforced (repeated from ‘Set 3’) instead of leaving a gap) f - frog, fish ff - giraffe, coffee l - lemon, leaf ll - bull, ball ss - grass, dress Recommendations Adding the word labels is optional and best provided as an extension for more able/quick learners. I find a small, flat (shallow) container is helpful for each learner to have if a group are working on the same activity set at the same time (to stop cut-out pictures becoming muddled up). Each different set here is a different colour to help with this. However, if learners only cut out one picture at a time there shouldn’t be an issue with losing any pictures. Tiny ‘word labels’ which can be cut out and added to the ‘phoneme pictures’ to ‘’extend’ the activity (page 2, lower right side). I feel it t is best, however, to complete the phoneme/grapheme matching first (without word labels initially) to encourage learners to think about the sounds in each word more carefully.

The adult can pre-cut the x10 rectangular shaped puzzles - pages 1 and 2 (grey dotted lines guide where to cut) to separate them from each other. The adult can also cut the orange dotted lines to separate the segments of each puzzle itself. Picture/word puzzles Each learner needs to match up the segments of each picture/word puzzle to complete the x10 pictures and words - all words on the ‘picture/word’ puzzles are made using only the ‘m d g o c k’ letters/sounds. Once the puzzles are complete learners can use these as a reference to complete the x10 sentences (pages 3-6). Extension/follow-on sentences… There are two versions of the same x10 sentences to complete. A larger format (pages 3 and 4) which can be cut up (perhaps laminated) and written on (if laminated - with a dry wipe/wipe clean pen). The smaller scale version (page 5) has the same x10 sentences but ‘all on one page’ for learners to complete with a pencil, as a ‘worksheet’. Answers are included on page 6 in the same format which learners can use for quick, easy reference. Resource Details… The sentences include high frequency words ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘is’, ‘go’, ‘on’, ’can’. The sentences also include the word ‘spade’ (with an image of a spade directly above this word), ’peas’ (with an image of pod with peas in/outside of it directly above this word) and ’hot’ (with an image of pot with steam coming out of the spout directly above this word). The sentences included are - ‘A pink _ _ _’. (pig) (‘pink’ can be sounded out) ‘This is a hot _ _ _ ‘. (pot) (‘h’ in ‘hot’ may not have been introduced yet) ‘This is a _ _ _ ‘. (dog) ‘The _ _ _ _ can spin‘. (cogs) (‘spin’ can be sounded out) ‘Peas in a _ _ _ ‘. (pod) (‘peas’ may be tricky) ‘This _ _ _ can go on top’. These x16 rectangles can then be shuffled and placed on a table top (shuffled) for learners to read and match together. Resource Details… The words on the word cards only use the letters s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k (from sets 1 AND 2) These words are: dog map pig cap pot mat pod cogs Learners may find ‘pod’, ‘cogs’ and ‘mat’ more tricky to match as these three words are not as obvious. ‘Pod’ may be a new word/concept to some learners (what a ‘pea’ grows inside of), learners may not know/be familiar with ‘cogs’ (or know what they are called) and may confuse ‘cat’ with ‘mat’ as the word they are looking for - to match the ‘mat’ picture card. I have included an orange arrow pointing to the ‘mat’ to hopefully help make this clearer. The segments of all x9 ‘picture/word puzzles’ can then be placed on a table top (shuffled) for learners to complete. Picture/word puzzles Each learner needs to match up the segments of each picture/word puzzle to complete the x9 pictures and words - all words on the ‘picture/word’ puzzles are made using only the ‘s a t p i n’ letters/sounds. The sentences included are - ‘A crocodile can _ _ _ _’. (snap) ‘We wear _ _ _ _ _ ‘. (pants) ‘Scissors can _ _ _ _ ‘. (snip) ‘The cat is _ _ _ ‘. (sat) ‘You can _ _ _ _ ‘ a globe. What’s included? This download includes four A4, portrait pdf sheets to practise matching upper and lowercase alphabet letters using an alphabet strip (showing capital letters) and carrots (for lowercase letters). Two pages are clear instructions on how to make the rabbit face into a ‘posting box’ (with photos supporting each step). An empty tissue box is needed to make this resource. On this download dotted guide lines show where to cut, there are also two ‘slits’ which need making and a hole to be cut (inside the rabbits mouth). Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The photo shows how this resource looks which complete. The idea is that learners move the capital letter alphabet strip left/right to show a different capital letter. They then ‘post’ the matching lowercase alphabet letter into the rabbit’s mouth. This is an ideal activity to keep learners busy and independent. I have included two versions of the letter ‘k’ as some learners may be more used to the look of one style than the other. This download includes one A4, landscape pdf sheet to practise ‘ordering the alphabet’ and matching up upper and lowercase alphabet letters using rainbow coloured circle shaped ‘beads’. Dotted guide line showing where to cut and punch a hole are included. The hole to punch is 5mm in size though a smaller hole punch could be used (to increase the fine motor skills challenge!) Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The layout includes x6 rows and x9 columns of circular shaped beads each with an upper/lowercase letter. Beads are arranged in rainbow order to help guide and motivate learners in finding the next number (and colour) in the pattern. This is an ideal activity to keep learners busy and independent. Resource details Two versions of this resource are included - in alphabetical order and grouped by letter shape and how similar letters are written. This activity has been designed to write straight on. Each letter has a clear ‘starting dot’ so learners know where to place their pencil to begin and dots on top of each letter provide guidance of where exactly to write. Both versions include the letters ‘on’ or without lines. There is a clear space at the base of each sheet for learners to write their name. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s included? x2 sheets (x10 picture and x10 word cards) for CVC words focusing on words with the ‘u’ sound. Both sheets are portrait orientation, pdf format. What’s it for? This CVC phonics/reading practise activity set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for groups/individuals to be getting on with independently. How to use it? An adult needs to print and pre-cut the cards into rectangles (dotted guide lines make where to cut clear). The set of cards should be placed on a carpet/table top. Learners read each word by sounding out the individual phonemes, they then match this to the picture from this set. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words. What’s included? This download includes x3 A4 portrait pdf sheets. These include three dice to make, x2 ‘game cards’ and simple, clear instructions for how to play the game. Red Die 1 (page 1) Includes sounds s b h m p r Amber Die 2 (page 2) Includes sounds a a e i o u Green Die 3 (page 2) Includes sounds ck d g ll n t How to use this resource An adult needs to cut out and make the three phonics dice - clear instructions are included. Each player will need one game card (and a pencil!) There are two game cards included on page 3 - these can be printed/photocopied as many times as needed and the sheet cut in half to separate the two game cards (one per player). This game can be for one learner to play alone or for several learners to play together in a group (taking turns). The game instructions are included on pages 1 and 3 of the download - I will also include them here: How to play game Each player takes turns to roll the three dice together. Each player places the three dice next to each other, left to right - red, amber, green. Player sounds out the graphemes to read the word. If this is a ‘real’ word player writes it in the coloured boxes on their card (on the ‘left’ side). If this is a ‘nonsense’ word the player writes this word in the coloured boxes on their card (on the right side). Play passes to next player. If a player rolls the same combination as previously rolled they can have another turn. First player to roll (read and write!) x5 real OR nonsense words wins! There are various words which can be made using this combination of letters in the set order. Some ‘real word’ examples include sat/bat/hat/mat/pat/rat, pig/bill/hill/mill/pill, pull/bug/hug/mug/rug, sock/rock/hog, hen/men/pen/red/bell/sell.
